No amount of money can ever make up for what is lost by those whose lives are ruined by the negligence of others. However, as a £19 million compensation payout to a young road accident victim showed, a settlement can at least bring relief to hard-pressed families and ensure a lifetime of first-rate professional care.
The 23-year-old man was aged just seven when he was knocked down by a car that was using a bus lane to get past stationary traffic. He sustained life-changing brain injuries that have left him with acute behavioural difficulties. He will require intensive treatment throughout his life and is unlikely ever to be able to earn a living.
The driver's insurers admitted liability for the accident and, following extensive negotiations, a final settlement of his case was agreed. In approving the lump-sum payment, the High Court noted that it makes admirable provision for all the professional care he will need during what is expected to be a long life.
